How do I restore a signature of Thomas Jefferson on laid paper?
Q. Dear Donia,
Is it possible to restore a large cut signature of Thomas Jefferson (on laid paper)? It has a clean diagonal tear through the signature. Thanks, Pete
A. Dear Pete,
It is possible to repair the tear through the Jefferson signature. Without seeing it, however, I can't tell you how well the repair will come out because there are a lot of variables to consider.
This is a job for someone with training so the best thing to do is to contact a paper conservator in your area. To locate someone who can do this work, consult the American Institute for Conservation "Find a Conservator" page. In Auburn, Mass. you will have several options within the state.
Good luck restoring your signature.
