Protecting a Label Inside a Box Being Refinished

Dear Donia,
How do I protect the paper label inside the chisel box I'm refinishing?

Chisel box

Q. Dear Donia,

I'm working on refinishing a chisel box. On the inside is a paper label that I'd like to not ruin. Is there any byproduct I can put over it so it doesn't harm the label? I intend on staining the box and possibly using a polyurethane finish to protect the wood. If no product exists, how can I remove the paper label then reattach it after I'm done with the finished wood? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michael

A. Dear Michael,

There is no easy material to put over the label, and it is even harder to get the label off safely. The best thing to do if you want to continue to use the box for chisels, or anything else you may want to put in it, is to carefully stain and poly around the label and then fit a piece of polyester sheeting into the lid (I am guessing that is where the label is) so it is protected for the future.

I hope this helps.
