2019 Honorary Chair, Kenyatta D. Berry

Kenyatta D. Berry

Professional genealogist, entrepreneur, and attorney Kenyatta D. Berry will join the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), to share her more than 20 years of experience in genealogical research and writing during Preservation Week, April 21 – 27, 2019. A frequent lecturer, writer, and television personality, Berry focuses on African American genealogy, slave ancestral research, and DNA.

Author of The Family Tree Toolkit: A Comprehensive Guide to Uncovering Your Ancestry and Researching Genealogy and host of the PBS show Genealogy Roadshow, Berry works to bridge the gap between genealogists and historians, a merging of professions that she deems significant and necessary. In addition, Berry has been featured in Black Enterprise, Real Simple, Jet, Wall Street Journal, Orange County Register, The Sacramento Bee, and Wave Newspaper. She has been a guest on numerous radio programs, including #WomensWednesday, Make it Plain and Extreme Genes on SiriusXM Radio. Most recently, Berry has appeared on FOX’s The Real, where she revealed DNA test results of the show’s hosts, and on For Peete’s Sake on the OWN network. Berry, a native Detroiter, is a graduate of Michigan State University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

As Preservation Week 2019 Honorary Chair, Berry will appear in Preservation Week artwork and in a genealogy-themed webinar that will be presented during Preservation Week  and will chronicle preservation efforts through various social media channels. You can also follow her on Twitter and Facebook with @kenyattadb as she chronicles preservation efforts in the field of genealogy.

This year’s Preservation Week theme is “Preserving Your Family History”, and participating libraries will celebrate by offering special programs and services to connect library users with preservation tools, promote the importance of preservation and strive to enhance knowledge of preservation issues among the general public. Institutions around the world will be using the hashtag #preswk to talk about their preservation programs and services.
