Scholarships for New Media Specialty

The following scholarship available through the ALA Scholarship Program is designed to encourage the entry of qualified persons that plan to pursue a specialty in new media. New media is defined as digital technology’s transformation of business and culture during the past 25-plus years, clarifying the evolution of digital communications and human-computer interaction.

  • Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship in New Media  - this $2,500 scholarship includes a travel stipend to attend ALA Midwinter and will support a student in an ALA accredited master’s program in Library and Information Studies pursing a specialty in new media. The scholarship was created in memory of Peter Lyman, former university librarian and professor emeritus of the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley.

Applicants for the Peter Lyman Memorial/SAGE Scholarship must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident; must attend an ALA accredited master's program; must not have completed more than 12 semester hours or one-third of the required semester hours towards MLS/MLIS/MIS prior to June 1 of the year awarded; and must submit a complete application.

Factors considered in making these awards include:

  • evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship.

Achievement in these areas may best be demonstrated by statements indicating the nature of library and other experience, by professional references, and by the personal statement included in the online application.

ALA also has general scholarships, scholarships for library support staff, and scholarships for underrepresented groups. All ALA Scholarships can be applied for through the ALA Scholarship Program.
