1.     Electronic Delivery of Membership Cards

Why is ALA delivering membership cards via e-mail?
To operate in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable manner and be a responsible steward of dues dollars, ALA now electronically provides membership cards, detailed receipts of payment, and an ALA membership certificate. ALA believes this change is another positive step in operating more effectively and creatively to better serve our members.
When will electronic delivery of membership cards begin?
It will begin September 2013, in conjunction with the beginning of ALA's new fiscal year.
Do I need my membership card to prove I am a member? (To get into an event or conference, etc.)?
An ALA membership card is never required to access or use any ALA, Division, or Round Table programs, events, conferences, or other ALA service. Your electronically delivered card, certificate, and receipt let you confirm your current membership(s) in ALA, any divisions, and any round table you have joined in your current membership year. The receipt can be used for employer reimbursement purposes. While your membership card and certificate provide a convenient place to access your member number and other details regarding your current membership, they are not required ALA documents.
What materials/documents do I receive with my e-mail?
Your materials include your membership card, a detailed receipts of your dues payment, and an ALA membership certificate.
What if I do not receive my e-mail?  My employer blocks all messages with attachments.  What should I do?
  1. Check your e-mail spam and other filters to verify delivery of your ALA e-mails. If you need the materials to be sent to a different e-mail or you need to have your e-mail information updated or changed in your ALA record contact ALA Member Service at 800-545-2433 or membership@ala.org.
  2. Add membership@ala.org to your safe senders list to make it more likely that you will always receive your membership card and other materials.
  3. You can do your own update online at www.ala.org/membership/renew-update. On the left side of the page select “Renew, Update or Add to Your Membership.” From there you will be able access an online form. In the “Contact Information” section of the form you can add or update your email address.
How do I obtain a printed copy?
If you have question, please contact ALA Member Service at 800-545-2433 or membership@ala.org to request that a printed version be mailed to you.
How do I update/change my e-mail address in my ALA member record.
Please contact ALA Member Service at 800-545-2433. You can also update your contact information via the online renewal-update form.  An update to your contact information does not result in any change to your membership status or payment schedule.

2.     AL Direct E-Publication Now Members Only

What is AL Direct?
AL Direct is the popular weekly e-newsletter, from American Libraries magazine that provides summaries and links to news, announcements, and other information of interest to library and information science professionals. ALA members receive AL Direct automatically, each week, via e-mail.
Why is ALA changing AL Direct to members only?
Because creating and disseminating AL Direct depends on member dues, going forward, our member advisory board has agreed that only members of the American Library Association will receive the emailed version.

Those who are not ALA members will still be able to access AL Direct freely on the American Libraries magazine website some time after initial publication at www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org but will no longer be able to subscribe and receive it in their inbox. Other “Direct” e-newsletters such as ALA JobLIST Direct and International AL Direct remain available free to subscribers.
When will the change occur?
The change of AL Direct to a members only e-publication begins on September 1, 2013.
Who will receive AL Direct?
All current personal members of ALA who have a valid email address in their membership records will receive AL Direct.
I am an ALA member, but I don’t receive AL Direct. How do I sign up?
Make sure your email address is correct in the ALA membership database. Go to  www.ala.org/membership/renew-update. On the left side of the page select “Renew, Update or Add to Your Membership.” From there you will be able access an online form. In the “Contact Information” section of the form you can add or update your email address.
I am an ALA member, my email address is correct, but I still don’t receive AL Direct. What should I do?
The following steps may be helpful:
  1. Check your junk mail folder to make sure AL Direct is not automatically going there.
  2. In your organization's or personal email program, be sure to white list ALDirect@ala.org as the sender, and Informz.net as a domain name.
  3. Contact your local network administrator to see if a spam blocker or content filter has been installed on your institution’s servers. Some spam blockers misconstrue AL Direct emails as spam, and content filters sometimes misidentify AL Direct content as inappropriate. Inform them that AL Direct is sent every week from the domain informz.net.
If this still doesn’t work, contact AL Direct (include your name and ALA membership number) and a staff member will attempt to identify the problem.
