Monographs and Other Non-serial Publications

LITA publishes monographs (usually more than 100 pages) and the LITA Guide Series (practical, how-to information, usually under 100 pages). Proposals are submitted to the Acquisitions editor, and approved by the Publications Committee and the LITA Board. The LITA Executive Director prepares letters of agreement with authors and arranges for publication and publicity.

Units of LITA and individual members may publish monographs, reports, results of surveys, articles, proceedings, pamphlets, brochures, etc. In the initial planning stage, preparation of materials for publication is coordinated by the LITA Acquisitions editor position in consultation with the LITA Publications Committee and Executive Director.

All drafts, manuscripts and correspondence concerning the anticipated publications are distributed as appropriate. Final proposals are submitted by the Acquisitions editor to the Publications Committee, with a copy to the Executive Director, including the publishing schedule. Any expenditure of division funds required by the proposal is referred by the LITA Executive Director to the LITA Board of Directors for approval, and is approved as part of or an addition to the budget. The Publications Committee approves or rejects the proposal, may make suggestions for improvement, or otherwise assist the author or editor in the publishing project. LITA's publications are listed at  LITA Publications.

According to ALA policy, all materials generated by an ALA division or other unit for publication must be offered to ALA Production Services. If the division is not satisfied with the offer, the division may publish the materials through another publisher. LITA receives all revenues and pays all expenses, including overhead charges of the American Library Association per ALA policy. Royalties of up to 10% percent of sales revenue may be paid to authors if recommended by the Publications Committee.

The Acquisitions Editor is appointed for a three-year renewable term. A choice of stipend or reimbursement of travel expenses to ALA conferences is offered to the Acquisitions Editor.
