How to Get a Federal Library Job

The U.S. government operates more than 1,000 libraries across all 50 states and around the world. Librarians and library technicians work for all three branches of the federal government-- legislative, executive, and judicial-- and in both civilian and military agencies. From the Library of Congress in Washington to the National Park of American Samoa Library in Pago Pago, federal and armed forces librarians provide a wide range of services in a variety of settings.

This “How to Get a Federal Library Job” panel will discuss the different paths to employment as a federal or military librarian and provide practical tools for navigating these paths. We will discuss the USAJOBS website, the mysteries of the federal resume format, how to navigate the federal hiring process, and the differences among federal agencies in terms of hiring and operations.

Who Manages, Who Leads: Part Two: Mentor, Progress, Succeed, Lead

Four-week asynchronous course starting on March 25, 2024

The second of a two-part series of four-week interactive programs, to introduce and continue educating existing managers and leaders to advanced theory and practice. Managers see the mission. Leaders see the vision. To every leader you will have a manager and to every manager a leader. Issues in managing other staff, resources, and services, as well as leadership roles and expectations are daunting tasks. Yes, some leaders are born, but others can be trained.

This course benefits those who participated in the first of this series, those who have a great resume, and those with successful interview who are hired.

The instructor, Debra Lucas, is an innovative librarian, determined to expand her horizons after serving as the Head of Research, Training, Instruction, and Interlibrary Loan at D’Youville University in Buffalo, NY
