CHICAGO — Orchestrating the library space planning process is more important than ever before.  As libraries change from depositories to activity centers, the spaces and furniture in them are changing and becoming increasingly more flexible.  “Building Blocks for Library Space Planning – From Vision to Paper” (LLA2) starts attendees off with ‘big picture visioning’ and ends with practical advice on current real-life library planning.  The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) invites everyone who has an interest in or desire to know more about library space planning to this highly interactive and intriguing preconference.

Building Blocks will be held at the Wells Fargo Building, 333 Market St., five blocks from the convention center from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Friday  June 26, 2015, just before the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco.  Registration includes lunch, a happy hour with drinks and snacks and a copy of “Building Blocks for Planning Functional Library Space.”

You’ll learn the elements of successful planning, including big picture visioning, understanding space needs and diagramming adjacencies, as well as have the opportunity to submit your own library for a small group planning exercise.  Attendees will learn how to navigate a library planning process; how to use the Building Block Book as a reference guide; and have gained an understanding of “big picture” issue for the planning process.

Discover the elements of planning library space, with a segment on developing a space needs program that summarizes the space needed and an exercise during a working lunch on diagramming adjacencies.  After lunch attendees will break up into small groups to focus on a particular library or library space to do a planning exercise.

Speakers include:  Elliott Felix, Brightspot Strategy, on visioning; Seth Penchansky, architect, on planning basics; Kevin Huse, architect. who will lead the small group sessions; and Pat Husband, East Baton Rouge Parish Library, moderating the small group presentations during the happy hour.

If participants have a library program that they want to submit for the planning exercise, please submit it via email to Seth Penchansky, spenchansky@p-wa.com by May 24. At the end of the exercise each group will present there solution during the happy hour.

The cost to attend Building Blocks is $205 for LLAMA members, $245 for ALA members, and $295 for nonmembers.  Register through the ALA Annual Conference website, http://alaac15.ala.org   Enter the code LLAMA2015 to get the LLAMA member rate.
