ALA welcomes Macmillan expansion of library

WASHINGTON, D.C.—This month Macmillan will offer its entire e-book backlist to libraries, as reported in Publishers Weekly. Macmillan first entered the library e-book market in January 2013 by offering a pilot of its mystery titles under the Minotaur imprint, then expanded the pilot to romance titles in June.

ALA seeking nominations for libraries on the cutting edge

WASHINGTON, D.C.— As part of its ongoing effort to identify and recognize libraries that are delivering quality library services in new ways, the American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting submissions for the best library practices using cutting-edge technology. Nominations must be submitted by Nov. 15, 2013, and winners will be announced at the upcoming 2014 ALA Midwinter Meeting, which will be held Jan. 24-28, 2013.

ALA calls for leap forward in E-rate goals; streamlined program

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Monday, the American Library Association (ALA) asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to accelerate deployment of the high-capacity broadband needed to serve students and learners of all ages through our nation’s libraries and schools. ALA calls for new strategic investments in telecommunications and broadband infrastructure, as well as program changes to improve cost-effectiveness and streamline processes to enable greater participation.

Libraries urged to participate in first Digital Inclusion Survey

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) is encouraging public libraries to participate in the first Digital Inclusion Survey. The survey will take the pulse of public library service in the areas of digital literacy, economic and workforce development, civic engagement, educational support, health information and public access to the internet. Information about the project and access to the online survey are available at http://digitalinclusion.umd.edu. The survey will be open through Nov. 15, 2013.

Maine State Librarian touts E-rate successes at congressional hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Maine State Librarian Linda Lord called for a “proactive vision for meeting the educational and learning needs of our communities for the next 15 years and beyond” at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Representing our nation’s 16,400 public libraries, Lord touted the success of the E-rate program in helping connect nearly 100 percent of libraries to serve more than 30 million people every week.

Join free Google Hangout July 30: Revisiting CIPA 10 Years Later

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Library Association (ALA) and Google, Inc., will host national library, education, technology, legal and policy experts for a national symposium considering the impact of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) on access to electronic information July 29 and 30. Librarians nationwide can join the virtual conversation with two Google Hangouts on July 30.

DigitalLearn.org offers resources and collaboration for digital literacy trainers

CHICAGO — After months of thoughtful planning, development and beta testing, DigitalLearn.org has officially launched. This online hub for digital literacy offers an active community of practice and an evolving collection of training resources for those who teach and support digital learners. DigitalLearn.org is managed by the Public Library Association (PLA) and funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
