Lennon receives 2010 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has selected Diana J. Lennon of Ossining, N.Y., the recipient of the 2010 Miriam L. Hornback Scholarship.

The $3,000 award is given to an ALA or library support staff member to help finance the pursuit of a master’s degree in library and information studies.  The scholarship was named in memory of Miriam Hornback, a longtime ALA staff member, who was secretariat to the ALA Council and Executive Board.

Lennon’s fluency in Spanish, as well as her commitment to community outreach, has led her to teach several computer classes in Spanish. In addition to basic computer courses, she has designed and taught a class that helps Spanish-speaking patrons practice English online while improving computer skills.

“Obtaining my Masters Degree in Library Science will allow me to provide services and programs to the community as an ‘official’ librarian,” says Lennon. “I also believe that more Spanish speakers need to be recruited to Library Science careers, and I hope to lead by example, both as a Spanish speaker and as a knowledgeable and approachable librarian in a public library.”

Lennon will be attending Long Island University’s Palmer School of Library Science.
