ALSC names 2011 Notable Children’s Recordings

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has selected its 2011 list of Notable Children’s Recordings. The list includes recordings for children 14 years of age and younger of especially commendable quality that demonstrate respect for young people’s intelligence and imagination; exhibit venturesome creativity; and reflect and encourage the interests of children and young adolescents in exemplary ways.

The recordings selected are:

Eric Velásquez y Pam Muñoz Ryan ganan premios “Pura Belpré”

SAN DIEGO – Eric Velásquez,  ilustrador de “Grandma’s Gift” y Pam Muñoz Ryan, autora de “The Dreamer”, son los ganadores del Premio de Ilustración Pura Belpré 2011 y el Premio al Autor Pura Belpré 2011 respectivamente. La distinción rinde homenaje a los escritores e ilustradores hispanos cuyas obras constituyan el mejor reflejo, afirmación y celebración de la experiencia cultural hispana en la literatura infantil.

Sy Montgomery, Nic Bishop win 2011 Sibert Medal

SAN DIEGO - Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop, author and photographer/illustrator of “Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World’s Strangest Parrot,” were named the winners of the 2011 Robert F. Sibert Medal for the most distinguished informational book for children published in 2010. The award was announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 7 – 11 in San Diego.

Author/Illustrator Tomie dePaola wins 2011 Wilder Award

SAN DIEGO Author/Illustrator Tomie dePaolais the winner of the 2011 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award honoring an author or illustrator, published in the United States, whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children. His numerous works include “26 Fairmont Avenue” (Putnam, 1999); “Strega Nona” (Prentice-Hall, 1975); “The Legend of the Poinsettia” (Putnam, 1994); and “Oliver Button Is a Sissy” (Harcourt, 1979).

2011 Batchelder Award honors Delacorte Press for “A Time of Miracles”

SAN DIEGO- Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, a division of Random House, Inc., is the winner of the 2011 Mildred L. Batchelder Award for “A Time of Miracles.” The Mildred L. Batchelder Award honors an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States during the preceding year.

Peter Sís to deliver 2012 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture

SAN DIEGO– Peter Sís will deliver the 2012 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture. The announcement was made today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 7 – 11 in San Diego.

Paul R. Gagne and Melissa Reilly Ellard win 2011 Carnegie Medal for “The Curious Garden”

SAN DIEGO – Paul R. Gagne and Melissa Reilly Ellard of Weston Woods, producers of “The Curious Garden,” are the 2011 recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for excellence in children’s video. The award was announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 7– 11 in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO – Eric Velasquez, illustrator of “Grandma’s Gift,” and Pam Muñoz Ryan, author of “The Dreamer” are the 2011 winners of the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award and Author Award, honoring Latino authors and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children’s books. The awards were announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 7 – 11 in San Diego.

Clare Vanderpool, Erin E. Stead win Newbery, Caldecott Medals

SAN DIEGO - Clare Vanderpool, author of “Moon Over Manifest”and Erin E. Stead, illustrator of“A Sick Day for Amos McGee,”are the 2011 winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott Medals, the most prestigious awards in children’s literature.

Kate DiCamillo, Alison McGhee and Tony Fucile win Geisel Award for “Bink and Gollie”

SAN DIEGO– Authors Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee and illustrator Tony Fucile are the 2011 recipients of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for “Bink and Gollie,” published by Candlewick Press. The award was announced today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 7 – 11 in San Diego.
