CHICAGO — The ability to catalog proficiently can be a valuable skill for every librarian, but proper training is essential. Offered by ALA Publishing in collaboration with the San José State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool), the new advanced eCourse “Cataloging for Non-Catalogers” will take participants from beginner to advanced cataloger in 12 weeks.

This advanced eCourse is ideal for working professionals who have no cataloging experience and need to learn the basics quickly, for individuals who want to broaden their professional skill set and for institutions and organizations that would like their non-cataloging staff to become proficient at hands-on cataloging.

Under the guidance of Dr. Sylvia Hall-Ellis, an expert cataloger and instructor at the SJSU iSchool, students will learn about different cataloging schemes, different types of records and different tools. Building upon the fundamentals, they will then develop an understanding of how to catalog different types and formats of library materials. The course will wrap up with several weeks of hands-on exercises building records for library materials.

The course will be delivered entirely online with coursework completed asynchronously. Within the week-by-week format, students will be able to work at their own pace and interact with Hall-Ellis and fellow students through emails and message boards without the constraints of attending a live session at a specific time. The advanced eCourse “Cataloging for Non-Catalogers” begins on Monday, Sept. 22, 2014.
