Chapter Relations Committee I, Saturday, June 25, 2016, 1:00–2:30 p.m., OCCC, W307A

Chapter Relations Committee Program, "Do you want to plan a conference?" Saturday, June 25, 4:30-5:30 p.m., OCCC, W205

Conferences can be overwhelming. Registration details, hotel reservations, hoops to jump through at your organization to get reimbursements – and that’s all before you even set foot in the conference center!

Getting out of your comfort zone to attend a conference is one thing, but what if you’re asked to help PLAN THE CONFERENCE? That’s when the anxiety and Conference Panic Dreams* (CPD) set in. Whose job is it to print the name badges? Who chooses the tote bag? Do we want tote bags? How do we draw people into the Exhibit Hall? Conference planning hones your library skills – everything from program planning and scheduling to creating (and sticking to) a budget, down to conducting a reference interview with the hotel to make sure you understand their language (BEO? 15,000 square feet? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO ME?).

If you are planning a conference for an ALA Chapter, please join us on Saturday, June 25, 4:30-5:30 p.m., OCCC, W205, for an overview of conference planning and discussions. We want to hear what you are doing in your chapter. Some of us have conferences every year, some every other year. Some of us have Award Banquets; others hand out Awards at Business Meetings. Fundraising, negotiating Wi-Fi, using volunteers, conference survey questions…anything and everything is up for discussion!

Lisa R. Varga is the Executive Director of the Virginia Library Association, a chapter of ALA. She has, in the past, sold wallpaper, worked in a financial services office, been a Youth Services Librarian, a Human Resources Coordinator for the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Fredericksburg, VA, and helped clients transition from DIALOG to web-based searches for a trademark research company. She has been Treasurer of her local elementary school PTA, has conducted technology training for library staff, worked retail and was a banquet server. The experiences gained at each of these jobs have helped her plan library conferences. Lisa is an admitted “conference junkie.”

*CPD is not a real thing; it’s just what Lisa calls it.
