New Roles and Changing Landscapes

ACRL's New Roles and Changing Landscapes goal area aims to aid the academic and research library workforce in effectively fostering change in academic libraries and higher education environments. Through this goal, ACRL seeks to deepen the Association's advocacy and support for the full range of the academic library workforce; equip the academic library workforce to effectively lead, manage, and embrace change, advocate for their communities, and serve as a catalyst for transformational change in higher education; and increase diversity, cultivate equity, and nurture inclusion in the academic library workforce.

Academic Library Advocacy Toolkit

Developed by a joint task force comprised of members from ACRL’s New Roles and Changing Landscapes and Value of Academic Libraries goal-area committees, the Academic Library Advocacy Toolkit is a curated collection of resources that can help equip academic library administrators and library professionals with the resources they need to advocate for the value, roles, and contributions of academic libraries to their campus communities.

The Academic Library Advocacy Toolkit was created in response to current and concrete pressures many academic libraries are facing, including challenges related to budgets, a diminished workforce, professional roles, and more.

New Roles and Changing Landscapes Committee

ACRL's work in new roles and changing landscapes is primarily carried out by the New Roles and Changing Landscapes Committee. The committee has active subcommittees on fostering change, open educational resources and affordability, stay strategies for organizations and individuals for retaining a diverse workforce, and recommendations and competencies that support access in emerging flexible and add-on roles in academic libraries.
