Friends Group/Foundation Grants & Awards
The United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant enables two Friends of a college/university library to attend the ALA Annual Conference. Applicants must be first-time attendees, and must be active in their college or university Friends of the Library group, or college/university library staff members who work in development, The winners each receive a grant of $850, plus full ALA Annual Conference registration.
The United for Libraries/Thrift Books Friends Grant application enables one member of a Friends of the Library group at a public library to attend the ALA Annual Conference. Applicants must be first-time attendees, and must be active in their public library Friends group. The winner will receive a grant of $850, plus full ALA Annual Conference registration.
Given annually to recognize outstanding efforts of Friends groups and Foundations. Submission are due in early May of each year. Winners receive $1,000.
Friends groups are recognized each year for outstanding efforts to promote and celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week in October. Applications are due in December. Winners receive a small financial award and certificate.
From 2005 to 2011, Best Friends Awards were given annually to recognize outstanding publicity and marketing materials created by Friends groups. Although the award is no longer given, the winning materials are available for viewing.
From 1998 to 2005, Friends of Libraries U.S.A. annually gave a $10,000 award in partnership with HarperCollins Publishers in honor of Barbara Kingsolver. Although the award is no longer given, the stories of the winners are inspiring and a worthwhile read.
