Additional Information: While the Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the organization, the role of the Executive Committee, as with all committees, is to help the Board accomplish its work in the most efficient way. Its main purpose is to facilitate decision making in between Board meetings or in the case of a crisis or other urgent circumstances.
This is responsible for a variety of specific tasks. YALSA’s Executive Committee provides support and training for the Board of Directors and Chairs and plans events such as the Leadership Development meetings at conferences. The Executive Committee also serves as YALSA’s direct link to ALA. For example, the President and President-Elect meet at conferences with all the other Division Presidents and President-Elects, the Fiscal Officer attends ALA finance and budget meetings, and the Division Councilor represents YALSA on ALA Council.
Facilitating the work of the Board between board meetings is a key role of the executive committee. For example, each fall the Executive Committee attends a Fall Executive Committee Meeting. This face-to-face meeting is a chance for Executive Committee members to check on the progress of Board work that is in-progress and to plan for Board member and Chair training at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting. The Executive Committee also spends one afternoon in a meeting hosted by ALA’s president that gathers together all of the Division Executive Committees as well as ALA’s Executive Board. YALSA’s Executive Committee also meets via conference call in the spring of every year. This meeting provides the group with a chance to check on the progress of Board projects since Midwinter and to plan for new Board member orientation and Chair training at the Annual Conference. The committee also meets at Midwinter and Annual, as per YALSA bylaws.
