The ALA Map and Geography Round Table

Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic)

Via the Cataloging and Classification Committee (CCC) and the executive board, MAGERT members have supported a proposal to develop a manual for the cataloging of early maps as part of a series of such manuals, the creation and publication of which is being coordinated by the Bibliographic Standards Committee (BSC) of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ALA. A status announcement and the proposal have recently been mounted on the Web site of the BSC. To see them in context, please start by going to http://www.rbms.info/committees/bibliographic_standards/index.shtml
and then under Descriptive Cataloging Rules, click on Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic). Action on the proposal depends on its approval by the BSC at ALA; it will be considered at their Saturday morning meeting, June 28, 2008, in Anaheim.

Thank you for your support. We will keep you informed of developments. We are hopeful that this will transpire and look forward to the input of CCC and other MAGERT and BSC members along the way.

Nancy Kandoian,
representing also Todd Fell, Carolyn Kadri, and Seanna Tsung
