Books with Deaf Characters and Books by Deaf Authors

Many librarians who are responsible for selecting deaf-related material for their collections have asked LSPDHHF for lists of books with deaf characters and books by deaf authors. LSPDHHF members are not aware of any comprehensive lists, but suggest instead using the Gallaudet University Library catalog as a means of identifying deaf-related materials. Gallaudet's Library makes every effort possible to purchase all deaf-related books, so the catalog is almost certainly the most comprehensive list available.

The Library's catalog can be accessed online from the Library's Web page by clicking on the ALADIN Catalog button. Then select WRLC Libraries Catalog.

For a list of books with deaf characters, click on Keyword (under Search By: on the right) and type the following search terms: "deaf character" not (videorecording or "motion picture"). The resulting list will include the books in the Library's collection with a deaf character.

For a list of books by deaf authors, click on Subject Heading (under Search By: on the right) and type the following search terms: authors deaf. The resulting list will include all books in the Library's collection by deaf authors.

For a list of fiction by deaf authors, click on Keyword (under Search By: on the right) and type the following search terms: authors and deaf and fiction.

These search strategies may result in a few bad hits, but for the most part you will find a comprehensive list of books in each category.

If you have trouble searching, please contact the Gallaudet University Library directly at 202 651 5217 (V), 202 651 5212 (TTY) or via e-mail at library.reference@gallaudet.edu.
