Policies and Procedures

A. Statement of Purpose

Young Adult Library Services is the official journal of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. The Journal primarily serves as a vehicle for continuing education for librarians serving young adults, ages 12 through 18. It will include articles of current interest to the profession, act as a showcase for best practices, provide news from related fields, and will spotlight significant events of the organization and offer in-depth reviews of professional literature. The Journal will also serve as the official record of the organization.

B. Content

Each issue may contain in-depth articles on important issues including intellectual freedom, collaboration, adolescent literacy, youth development, and leadership. The articles may be refereed or specifically requested by the editor. There may be best practice articles, interviews, speeches, or bibliographic essays.

The Fall issue will showcase speeches by YALSA award winning authors, awards celebration information and photos, background information on authors and books, and special bibliographies. Articles about adolescent literacy and teen reading habits and interests should also be included in this issue.

In its responsibility as a vehicle for communication for the membership of YALSA, the Journal will serve as the official record for the organization and contain major actions of the Board of Directors, significant policies, and documents including strategic plans and competencies statements.

C. Publications Rights

The Journal holds first publication rights to all speeches/papers presented at all YALSA preconference and program meetings at the ALA Annual Conference, ALA Midwinter Meeting, and division national conferences, as well as any other workshops, conferences or division sponsored program activities.

D. Copyright

All material in the Journal is subject to copyright by ALA and may be photocopied for the noncommercial purpose of educational or scientific advancement.

E. Editorial Responsibility

The editor has the final responsibility for the content of the Journal within the parameters of ALA, and YALSA policies. The editor assumes an obligation to represent the best interests of the division fairly and as fully as possible within the scope of the Journal and with due regard to the editor’s prerogative for producing a balanced and readable publication. Detailed qualifications, duties and responsibilities are spelled out in a formal written position description for the editor.

The editor is appointed by the president of YALSA for a three-year term, and is eligible for reappointment.

The editor receives an annual stipend plus additional funds to travel to two ALA conferences each year of the three-year term. The amount is to be determined by the YALSA Executive Director. The editor will be reimbursed for expenses incurred in editing and fulfilling the position requirements as outlined in the formal position description.

F. YALSA Publications Committee

The YALSA Publications Committee serves as an advisory committee for the Journal.

The individual members of the Committee serve as referees for articles determined by the editor to need the referee process

The editor of the Journal will be an ex-officio member of the Publications Committee.

G. Advertising

All advertising is subject to publishers’ (ALA and YALSA) approval. Publishers reserve the right to reject advertising. Advertiser and advertising agency assume liability for all content (including text representation and illustrations) of any advertisement printed, and also assume responsibility for any claims resulting from them against the publisher. The publishers assume no responsibility if for any reason it becomes necessary to omit an advertisement.

H. Personnel

The editor of the Journal shall:

Assume final authority for content of each issue, except for the news of the organization

Be responsible for manuscript solicitation, management of the referee process, and editing

Submit copy to the YALSA office and ALA Production Services in accordance with established procedures and schedule

Read and edit page proofs

Serve as an ex-officio member of the YALSA Publications Committee

Assume other duties as described in the Editor Job Description

The Division Executive Committee shall:

Oversee all aspects of production, distribution and financial management of the Journal within the parameters of ALA and YALSA policies

The Division Executive Director shall:

Serve as business manager

Prepare and submit the budget for review by appropriate bodies

Manage the Journal finances

Delegate responsibilities for the Journal to appropriate YALSA staff members

Provide information and copy concerning organization activities including Board of Directors actions, policies, and events that are appropriate for inclusion in the Journal

ALA Production Services shall:

Arrange for indexing




Submit production budget to the division Executive Director




Establish and maintain contracts with suppliers, printers and distribution centers




Establish the annual production schedule in consultation with the editor and division staff

Provide production services, e.g., copyright, reprints, copyediting, layout, and proofreading




Manage distribution of the Journal, e.g., postal permits, mailing labels




Receive, handle and proof advertisements




Manage advertising revenue and provide regular reports on income, advertising sales and subscriptions

Ebsco Subscription Services shall:

Record and maintain the subscription records of the Journal

ITTS shall:

Provide membership mailing information

I. ALA Rights and Permissions Office

The ALA Rights and Permissions Office, in consultation with division staff and in accordance with the ALA Rights and Permissions Policy, shall handle all requests for permission to reprint from the Journal.
