Three-year-old Hosea (Hosie) asked his father to draw this alphabet for him and with the help of his mother and brother, he actually wrote the text. Leonard Baskin, whose magnificent art illustrates this family effort, is a distinguished sculptor and graphic artist of international prominence.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott and is intended to create more abundant and joyful life in pictures for children.
