Figgs & Phantoms
by Ellen Raskin, and published by Dutton
About
The Figg family retired from a life in show business, settled in the town of Pineapple, and married into the Newton family. If this gives you the idea that Ellen Raskin has written a book filled with zany characters, subtlety of language, and fantastic episodes, you are correct. But if you stop there, you may miss the meaning, perhaps different for each reader, that is in this remarkable mystery/spook/philosophical dream story. The drawings and decorations illustrating each book have something of the same elusive quality as the story, but the whole is an inventive, amusing piece with elements that linger in the mind long after the book has been finished.
