Society of Illustrators Since 1980, the Society’s annual exhibit “The Original Art” has showcased the year’s most outstanding children’s book illustrations published in the U.S. The Society’s Hall of Fame honors many notable children’s book artists, including Howard Pyle, Maurice Sendak, and Jessie Willcox Smith. Other eminent children’s book illustrators, such as Barbara Cooney, Virginia Lee Burton, and Arnold Lobel have also been recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
