San Antonio, Tex.
Dedicated: 2000
The Menger, opened in 1859, is the oldest Hotel west of the Mississippi that has been in continual operation. Out of the many notable guests over the years, some of the literary guests are The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) author Oscar Wilde, The Gift of the Magi (1905) author O. Henry, Confederate soldier and poet Sidney Lanier, and Dinner at Antoine's (1948) author Frances Parkinson Keyes. Theodore Roosevelt famously recruited his "Rough Riders" in the Menger Bar.
