“Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience” Online Site Support Notebook

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, in Cooperstown, NY, is pleased to offer educational curriculum and meaningful learning opportunities in connection with the traveling “Pride and Passion” exhibit. In conjunction with the American Library Association, the Baseball Hall of Fame encourages librarians and educators across the country to connect with us by booking a curriculum consultation or utilizing our existing distance learning and videoconference programs.

The education department is pleased to offer individual curriculum consultations for librarians and educators interested in programming on-site in conjunction with the “Pride and Passion” exhibit. Please contact Anna Wade, Director of Education, at (607) 547-0349 or awade@baseballhalloffame.org to set up a conference call or site visit.

“Before You Could Say ‘Jackie Robinson’” is a dynamic unit illustrating how baseball reflected and led critical social shifts in American history from the Civil War to the modern-day Civil Rights movement. Beginning with the origin of the Negro leagues to Jackie Robinson's integration of Major League Baseball in 1947, untold stories of honor, courage, and perseverance are brought to life through interactive multicultural lessons spanning several subject areas.

The Baseball Hall of Fame draws upon its many resources—such as archived audio, video and still images—to enhance the distance learning experience, so you will need some specific videoconferencing equipment:

  • videoconferencing codec, short for “coder/decoder,” it processes and compresses the outgoing and incoming signals, Tandberg and Polycom manufacture the two prevalent videoconferencing hardware systems;
  • camera and microphone to transmit audio/video from your classroom to Cooperstown, after all, this is a live, interactive experience (this is generally included with equipment from Tandberg and Polycom);
  • television, screen, or otherwise blank surface to project images from the Hall of Fame;
  • speakers, in order to hear audio from the Hall of Fame; and
  • an enthusiasm for interactive, standards-based learning, using baseball as a platform.

Booking a videoconference with the Hall of Fame is easy—you can call (607) 547-0347 or e-mail education@baseballhalloffame.org to begin your registration process.
