Midwinter
Many of us here at ALA are getting ready to head to San Antonio (if not there already) for the ALA Annual Midwinter Meeting. Among the most popular sessions at this event is the LITA (Library Information Technology Association, a div. of ALA) Top Tech Trends session. On the LITA blog, Thomas Dowling posted his take on the trends, and Karen has her own list at FRL here.

Although I'm really looking forward to visiting San Antonio later this week for the meeting, the history, and the Riverwalk, ALA gatherings inevitably bring up thoughts of former and future ones—such as the ALA Annual Conference 2006 in New Orleans next June.
ALA members and staffers, as you know, start compiling their schedules for their meeting/conference attendance well in advance—so, although we're not even through Midwinter Meeting yet, here's an event at the upcoming ALA Annual gathering you may want to clear a day for:

Libraries Build Communities: ALA to Provide Volunteering Opportunities to Conference Goers at ALA Annual in New Orleans
CHICAGO—Librarians and library staff attending the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans, June 22-28, will show how “Libraries Build Communities” through daylong community service efforts to help rebuild New Orleans. As part of ALA's ongoing efforts to help the libraries and communities in the Gulf Coast, conference attendees will be able to volunteer for a full-day community service project on Friday June 23 or Tuesday, June 27. Conference goers will be able to choose from activities to help the New Orleans Public Library, Orleans Parish School District, or other community rebuilding efforts.
To volunteer, register at www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/annual/2006a/registration.htm under the ‘Special Registration Section.' The registration fee is $10 and will include transportation to and from the community project, lunch, and a ‘Libraries Build Communities' T-shirt.
