From Stories to Lifelong Readers

This program features award-winning writer, educator, and Founder of Nerds for Literacy, Tony Weaver Jr., in a dynamic discussion on the power of inclusive storytelling and its impact on youth literacy.

Tony is known for creating diverse stories that help young people feel seen, valued, and inspired. Motivated by the impact media stereotypes had on students in his community, he set out to create new narratives that challenge the status quo and encourage meaningful representation in literature and media.

Hosted in collaboration with the Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT), the Euclid Public Library Foundation, Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT), and Literacy Nation, the program highlights practical, culturally responsive strategies that public and school librarians can immediately apply. From graphic novels to poetry, picture books to historical narratives, the discussion will explore how stories can
transform children’s literacy journeys and foster a lifelong love of reading.

As ALA celebrates 150 years, this program equips reading champions to meet urgent literacy needs while honoring the power of inclusive literature.
