Creating Inclusive and Engaging Online Library Instruction-Sept 2021

As libraries have rapidly moved their instruction programs online over the last several months, librarians are being faced with the daunting task of redesigning their instructional content for an online environment. Participants in this course will develop an understanding of the key elements of effective and inclusive online instruction in all types of settings from tutorials to single-session instruction  sessions to multi-week classes. Through the course, they will be introduced not only to tools that can make online instruction more effective and engaging, but also important educational theories and models that they can apply to restructure their instruction to better reach an online audience. Participants will leave with skills that can be applied to both synchronous and asynchronous online library instruction.

Participants will gain experience with a variety of teaching models and tools. They will be given the materials needed to develop a resource guide customized to their own instructional needs. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Design engaging online content for synchronous and asynchronous online library instruction
  • Integrate interactivity and assessment into online teaching
  • Evaluate and improve the accessibility of online instruction materials

This course is suitable for any academic librarian or library instructor and the content learned can be applied to any library setting: including public, special and academic or those seeking employment.

Instructor

Carli Spina is the Head of Research & Instructional Services at the FIT Library. She holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, an MLIS from Simmons GSLIS, and an M.Ed. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has experience teaching in several different settings, including at community college, university, and graduate school libraries, and as an professional development instructor.

Tech Requirements

ALA uses Moodle for all online educational courses. It is hosted at http://ecourses.ala.org Learn more about Moodle at www.moodle.org.

All content for this course will be provided by the instructor. No textbook required.

The Moodle login instructions will be sent the Friday before the start date. The course site will remain open one week after the end date for students to complete any assignments and submit the course evaluation survey.

Credits

Continuing Education Credit - A certificate of completion will be sent to each participant upon successful completion of a course.

Although this course is not CEU-certified, many licensing boards will accept it for credit. Requirements vary by state and school district regarding certification and continuing education credits. The decision to grant CEU credits remains entirely up to your state or school district. If you are in need of credits, check with your state and/or school district before enrolling to determine eligibility. Some states will review your certificate of completion and course description to determine eligibility
