Diane Firmani, Golden Bachelorette Contestant and Librarian

From Library Shelves to Reality TV: Diane Firmani’s Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Reinvention

For Diane Firmani, a lifelong love of books and community has taken her from the quiet corners of school libraries to the bright lights of reality television—and back again. Her story is one of dedication, resilience, and a zest for life that continues to inspire both seasoned professionals and those just starting out.

📚 A Career Rooted in Curiosity and Care

Diane’s path into library sciences was paved by childhood memories of biking to the library with her girl friends, led by a mother who instilled a deep appreciation for reading. After earning her teaching degree and spending 17 years in the classroom, she transitioned into library work—first at a school where her principal offered her the position. Diane thrived in the role, spending 17 years at one school library and another five at a second before retiring to care for her ill husband.

Her favorite part of the job? Connecting with children who claimed to hate reading and helping them discover books they loved. She brought creativity into the library with activities like “book crimes,” where students guessed how books had been damaged, and she cherished the moments when a second generation of students were coming to the library.

Diane also coordinated Read Across America Day celebrations as part of her position. She secured guest readers which included TV personalities, local high school sports teams, Roller Derby skaters and the Mayor.

Though she didn’t attend national ALA conventions due to family and travel constraints, Diane was active in her local chapter and fondly remembers displaying celebrity-themed ALA posters in her library.

🌱 Retirement Redefined: Service, Travel, and New Adventures

Retirement hasn’t slowed Diane down. She now serves on the board of Kids Kupboard, a nonprofit feeding children in Wasilla, Alaska, where she volunteers distributing lunches, hosting fundraisers and community outreach. She also serves on the board of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age five. With this organization she helps at community fairs getting families signed up, helps with the distribution of books.

Still working part-time at a public library two days a week, Diane finds joy in the freedom retirement offers—especially the chance to travel with her brother and sister-in-law. Together, they’ve explored Tulum, Medellín, and Sicily, with Panama next on the itinerary.

Her advice for new retirees? “Make a clean break from your library rather than lingering. Look for something different to keep yourself busy. Get a schedule, get up early, make a plan, and volunteer.”

🌹 A Golden Adventure: Diane on Reality TV

In a surprising twist, Diane became a contestant on The Golden Bachelor, a reality TV show spotlighting romance in later life. Encouraged by her book club, she applied and underwent a rigorous selection process—including multiple Zoom interviews and background checks—before being whisked off to Los Angeles for filming.

Living in a mansion with bunk beds and a house full of expressive, diverse women was a unique experience. Diane appreciated the kindness and camaraderie, even as some contestants vied for camera time with larger-than-life personalities.

Her advice for those seeking love later in life? “Be a little aggressive, look for like-minded people. Make yourself available, take chances, be brave, and do things. Be authentic—at this age, you don’t have time to be phony.”

📖 Wisdom for the Next Generation of Librarians

To those just entering the field, Diane emphasizes the importance of mentorship. “Get a mentor to help you, especially with technology and workflows. Other librarians want you to succeed.” She also encourages new librarians to bring their personal strengths into the role—whether it’s decorating, organizing book fairs, or building community.
