Conflict as Opportunity: Library Restorative Practices for Youth

On-Demand
Webinar
Explore the praxis behind the Pima County (AZ) Public Library's culture shift to using restorative justice practices to facilitate more mindful approaches to incidents involving youth.

A free PLA 2018 post-conference on-demand webinar

Pima County (AZ) Public Library (PCPL) has radically shifted its approach toward interacting with youth in violation of the library’s Customer Code of Conduct. Using restorative justice practices, PCPL created a justice board with community partners to facilitate more mindful approaches to incidents involving youth, focusing on creating opportunities for growth and engagement rather than barriers to library access. This webinar explores the praxis behind this organizational culture shift including the successes and challenges faced by staff.

Originally presented May 22, 2018.

This is the first of two free webinars with content from programs originally scheduled for the PLA 2018 Conference. The two programs were cancelled due to weather-related travel difficulties that prevented the presenters' arrival in Philadelphia for the conference. The second free on-demand webinar, Your Neighbor is a Writer: Curating a Local E-book Collection, is also available.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this free on-demand webinar, participants will:

  • Gain a greater understanding of the structure necessary to implement a program such as this at their library; and
  • Understand the concept of restorative practice and its application to libraries.
