RESOLUTION ON THE NATIONAL AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Whereas,        The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has resulted in immense human and culture destruction; and

Whereas,        The National and University Library of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was virtually destroyed during August 1992 and numerous library workers lost their lives; and

Whereas,        The National and University Library was the most important depository of the national and culture heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina; and

Whereas,        The American Library Association has passed a similar resolution in support of restoring the National Library in Romania in 1990; and

Whereas,        Rebuilding the National and University Library is an important step in supporting democratic process in Bosnia and Herzegovina; now, therefore, be it

Resolved,       That the American Library Association expresses its concern over the burning of the National and University Library of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and urges the U.S. Government and the United Nations to lend financial and other assistance toward the restoration of this treasure of knowledge; and be it further

Resolved,       That the American Library Association takes a leadership role in formulating a campaign to work other organizations in helping to restore the National and University Library of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its services; and, be it further

Resolved,       That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the following: Secretary of State, Secretary General of the United Nations, and the Director of the National and University Library of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
