New Intellectual Freedom Bloggers for 2017

The Intellectual Freedom Blog has a new lineup of contributors for 2017. Founded in 2007, the blog has a history of top-notch, quality writers, and the Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) plans to continue the tradition. The blog squad consists of several members that alternate responsibilities for creating blog content about censorship, privacy, internet filtering, labeling and many other intellectual freedom topics.

ALA unveils shortlist for 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) today announced six books shortlisted for the esteemed Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awarded for the previous year's best fiction and nonfiction books written for adult readers and published in the United States. The two medal winners will be announced at the Reference and User Services Association’s Book and Media Awards event at ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sunday, January 22, 2017.

Dr. Carla Hayden to serve as the next Librarian of Congress

CHICAGO - Today the Senate approved the nomination of Dr. Carla Hayden to serve as the nation’s 14th Librarian of Congress.  Dr. Hayden, American Library Association (ALA) past president and director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, is the first female and the first African American to lead the Library of Congress. She also is the first professional librarian to be confirmed in more than 60 years.

Libraries stand firm in support of GLBT books

CHICAGO — In a year when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) communities are facing divisive “religious freedom” and “bathroom privacy” legislation, libraries are working against legislating discrimination by fostering acceptance through the power of books.  

The American Library Association (ALA), and hundreds of libraries will celebrate June 2016 as GLBT Book Month™, a nationwide celebration of the authors and books that reflect the GLBT experience.
