ALSC launches application for Everyone Reads @ your library mini-grants

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is now accepting applications for mini-grants intended to prepare libraries to incorporate Día into their existing programs, throughout the year.  Libraries will use these mini-grants to initiate a Día Family Book Club Program.  These mini-grants are part of ALSC’s Everyone Reads @ your library grant, funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

ALA awards deadline extended

CHICAGO — The deadline has been extended to Feb. 15 for a number of American Library Association (ALA) awards and grants, including the Beta Phi Mu Award, Melvil Dewey Award, Paul Howard Award For Courage, Scholastic Library Publishing Award and the Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators Supporting Services to Children.  Although the online application has a Dec. 1 deadline date, the applications will be accepted through Feb 15.

EBSCO awards five scholarships for librarians to attend 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting

CHICAGO — In co-sponsorship with the American Library Association (ALA), EBSCO awarded five librarians $1,500 scholarships to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting Jan. 25–29, 2013 in Seattle.

As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic: “The conversation starts here: How would you lead the discussion in your library to bring about meaningful change to an existing process, service, or procedure?”

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with StoryCorps, is accepting applications from public libraries and library systems interested in hosting “StoryCorps @ your library” programs.

Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant call for proposals

CHICAGO — The American Library Association’s Office for Research and Statistics is now accepting applications for the Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant. The grant is given to one or more librarians or library educators who will conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group of people.

The grant, up to $3,000, will be given to a proposed project that aims to answer a question of vital importance to the library community that is national in scope. Among the review panel criteria are:

Loleta D. Fyan Grant call for proposals

CHICAGO — The American Library Association’s Office for Research and Statistics is now accepting applications for the Loleta D. Fyan Grant. Loleta D. Fyan, ALA president 1951-1952, believed that every individual, regardless of residence, is equally entitled to high quality library service and that librarians must be adept in using the political process to acquire this "right of citizenship."

The grant, up to $5,000, is to be used for the development and improvement of public libraries and the services they provide. The project(s) criteria:

Nominations sought for prestigious research award

CHICAGO — Nominations are invited for the 2013 Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology, sponsored by OCLC, Inc. and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).  The deadline for nominations is Dec. 31, 2012.

Public libraries invited to seek $50,000 in training, support to help teens learn news literacy skills

CHICAGO — Public libraries and library consortia are invited to apply for more than $50,000 in training and support, in the News Know-how initiative that helps  students, grades 10-12, learn skills that will help them  distinguish fact from opinion , check news and information sources and distinguish between propaganda and news.
