Dollar General Literacy Foundation renews commitment to the American Dream literacy initiative

CHICAGO – Thanks to a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the American Library Association (ALA) and its Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) will administer a fifth round of American Dream grants to public libraries to expand services to adult English language learners.

The Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS) of the American Library Association (ALA), The United Nations Remember Slavery Programme, Fox Searchlight Pictures, and BazanED invite libraries to participate in a nationwide lecture series and community-building initiative, "The Birth of a Nation: Slavery, Resistance & Abolition." The series is in observance of the 185th Anniversary of Turner's Rebellion, as well as the United Nations' International Day for the Remembrance of The Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually

CHICAGO -  Today American Library Association (ALA) President Sari Feldman released the following message regarding diversity, equity and inclusion activities taking place during the ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition, June 23 - 28, in Orlando, Florida.

In the wake of the devastating and horrible tragedy that happened this past weekend in Orlando. I have been moved by the outpouring of concern and support from our ALA members toward the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.

Donate School Supplies in Orlando!

The ALA Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in collaboration with Orange County Library System and Librarians Build Community are sponsoring a school supplies drive at the 2016 ALA Annual Conference to benefit students in the Orlando area.  As you prepare for your trip, put a packet of pencils or notepaper in your suitcase – they don’t take up much room, and are good placeholders for the books you’ll surely be bringing back.  We are looking for:

Giao Luong Baker Receives 2016 LITA/OCLC Minority Scholarship

Giao Luong Baker has been selected to receive a 2016 Minority Scholarship in Library and Information Technology ($3,000) sponsored by the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) and OCLC. Baker will use the money to pursue a Graduate Academic Certificate in Advanced Management in Libraries and a Masters in Information Science at the University of North Texas Department of Library and Information Sciences

ALA awards 61 Spectrum Scholarships

CHICAGO — Today, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Diversity awards 2016-2017 Spectrum Scholarships to 61 exceptional students pursuing graduate degrees in library and information studies.  Since 1997, the ALA has awarded more than 1,000 Spectrum Scholarships.  In the 2016 application cycle, the Spectrum Scholarship Program received three times as many applications as there were available scholarships, and the majority of this year’s applicants were deemed highly fundable.  A prestigious committee of 10 jurors selected this year’s Spect
