Retired ALA Finance Director to go the extra mile for Spectrum

CHICAGO - Gregory Calloway, retired Associate Executive Director of Finance of the American Library Association (ALA) will be raising funds for ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program by participating in the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate in Evanston, Ill on June 19. 

“Today more than ever, awareness of and actions to promote diversity and inclusion are extremely critical to the betterment of our society. Supporting Spectrum is more important now than ever! Join me in the fight against all kinds of harmful…isms,” said Calloway.

Dr. Jamie Campbell Naidoo named 2016 Achievement in Library Diversity Research honoree

ALA Awards 2016 Diversity Research Grants

CHICAGO — The American Library Association’s Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services has announced the recipients of the Diversity Research Grant for 2016.

The grants consist of a one-time $2,500 award for original research. Recipients will conduct their research over the course of the year, are expected to compile the results of their research into a paper and will be asked to present and publish the final product in conjunction with the American Library Association.

ALA President, GLBTRT Chair Urge Georgia Governor to Veto HB 757

CHICAGO -  Today American Library Association President Sari Feldman and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) Chair Peter Coyl released a joint letter to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal urging him to veto House Bill 757. The bill is yet another example of a disturbing trend of state legislators working to adopt religious freedom laws that would guarantee that businesses have the right to exercise their constitutional freedom of religion in regard to the services they offer to the public.

2016 American Indian Youth Literature Award winners announced

CHICAGO — The American Indian Library Association (AILA), an affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA), has selected “Little You” (2013), published by Orca Book Publishers, written by Richard Van Camp and illustrated by Julie Flett as the 2016 Best Picture Book; “In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse” (2015), published by Amulet Books and written by Joseph Marshall III as the 2016 Best Middle School Book, and “House of Purple Cedar” (2014) Cinco Puntos Press, written by Tim Tingle as the 2016 Best Young Adult Book.
