Tuliao swims to honor mentors and raise funds for Spectrum

Miriam Tuliao has announced that she will participate in the Foster Lake Cable Swims (Sanctioned OW, 2 Mile Cable National Championship) to raise funds for the Spectrum Scholarship Program. The event will take place on July 12th in Sweet Home, Oregon.  This is Tuliao's eleventh year swimming to raise funds for ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program.

Retired ALA Finance Director continues to go the extra mile for Spectrum

Gregory Calloway, retired Associate Executive Director of Finance of the American Library Association (ALA) will once again be raising funds in support of the ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program by participating in the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate in Evanston, Ill on June 17.

PLA launches new interest groups in online community platform

CHICAGO -- The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has unveiled eight new interest groups in the online community platform, ALA Connect. ALA Connect is a site where members of ALA meet and mingle virtually, discuss library-related topics and issues, share ideas, collaborate in communities, and come together to do the work of the Association.

2018 Coretta Scott King Book Donation Grants Announced

CHICAGO — Art Aids Art and the eKhaya eKasi Art and Education Center in Khayelitsha, South Africa; the Athens Housing Authority, University of Georgia College of Education, and Parkview Community in Athens, GA; and the Uni Project in New York, NY have been selected to receive books as part of the 2018 Coretta Scott King Book Donation Grant program.

Alexandra Rivera wins the 2018 Equality Award

CHICAGO — Alexandra Rivera is the 2018 recipient of the ALA’s Equality Award. The annual award, $1,000 and a framed citation of achievement donated by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, is given to an individual or group for outstanding contributions toward promoting equality in the library profession.

Public Library Association announces library cohort for 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative

CHICAGO -- Today the Public Library Association (PLA) announced the libraries in its 2018 Inclusive Internship Initiative (III) cohort. Last summer, PLA piloted this first-of-its-kind internship program designed to present librarianship as a viable career option for the next generation of Americans. In 2017, PLA sponsored paid, mentored public library internships for 50 high school juniors and seniors at 39 host libraries across the U.S., including two tribal libraries and sites in Alaska and Hawaii.

AASL publishes new research on diversity in graphic novels

CHICAGO – New research published in the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) peer-reviewed online journal, School Library Research (SLR),examines how race is depicted in graphic novels for teens in light of the “We Need Diverse Books” and “Reading Without Walls” movements. SLR promotes and publishes high-quality original research concerning the management, implementation and evaluation of school library programs.
