ALA president responds to Orlando mass shooting

CHICAGO – American Library Association (ALA)  President Sari Feldman released the following statement regarding the tragic mass shooting at Pulse, a popular GLBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

“The library community is deeply saddened by the tragedy at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando,” said Feldman. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends, and the GLBTQ community.

Key committee recommends Dr. Carla Hayden for Senate confirmation as nation’s Librarian of Congress

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, the Senate Rules Committee voted to recommend that the full Senate approve the nomination of Dr. Carla Hayden to serve as the nation’s next Librarian of Congress. Dr. Hayden, who served as President of the American Library Association (ALA) from 2003 to 2004, would be the first woman and first African American, and just 14th Librarian of Congress, in history.

LeBeau elected RUSA 2017-2018 president

CHICAGO — Chris LeBeau, assistant teaching professor /learning and research librarian at the University of Missouri, iSchool / University of Missouri-Kansas City, has been elected the 2017-2018 president of the Reference and User Services Association, (RUSA). Prior to working in her current position, LeBeau was the reference librarian and coordinator of electronic services at Creighton University.

ASCLA members elect Smithee as 2017-2018 president

CHICAGO — Jeannette Smithee, retired and most recently the executive director of the Southeast Florida Library Information Network, (SEFLIN) from 2009 to 2015, has been elected the 2017-2018 president of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA).

Smithee said, “ASCLA has been an important part of my professional life for more than 25 years. I have had the opportunity to work with incredibly dedicated ASCLA members over the years and I am excited about continuing to serve in a leadership role on the ASCLA Board.”

ALA, Google launch “Libraries Ready to Code”

 
Today, the American Library Association (ALA) and Google, Inc. are launching the “Libraries Ready to Code” project to investigate the current nature of coding activities in public and school libraries for youth and broaden the reach and scope of this work.
