(WASHINGTON, DC) – Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Association (ALA), released the following statement regarding the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruling on United States Telecom Association, et al., v. Federal Communications Commission and United States of America:

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, the Senate Rules Committee voted to recommend that the full Senate approve the nomination of Dr. Carla Hayden to serve as the nation’s next Librarian of Congress. Dr. Hayden, who served as President of the American Library Association (ALA) from 2003 to 2004, would be the first woman and first African American, and just 14th Librarian of Congress, in history.

CHICAGO — Jeannette Smithee, retired and most recently the executive director of the Southeast Florida Library Information Network, (SEFLIN) from 2009 to 2015, has been elected the 2017-2018 president of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA).

Smithee said, “ASCLA has been an important part of my professional life for more than 25 years. I have had the opportunity to work with incredibly dedicated ASCLA members over the years and I am excited about continuing to serve in a leadership role on the ASCLA Board.”
