Libraries to Congress: Carve House Judiciary ECPA reform bill in stone now

 
The following statement was issued by the American Library Association upon passage by the House Judiciary Committee of the Chairman’s Substitute Amendment to the Email Privacy Act, H.R. 699.  It may be attributed to ALA President Sari Feldman:
 
"Passage today of the Email Privacy Act by the House Judiciary Committee is as important and welcome as it is overdue.

ALA Appoints Roger Rosen as Senior Advisor for National Policy Advocacy

 
The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Roger Rosen as a senior advisor in its Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP). In this capacity, Rosen will provide guidance on a broad range of topics in OITP’s new Program on Youth & Technology, which is focused on how libraries are well-placed to advance the creative and innovative thinking and learning needed by youth in the digital society. He also will advise on the association’s “Libraries Ready to Code” project.

ALA to Host Natl. Policy Convening on Advancing Economic Opportunities, Supporting Youth with Technology

ALA, AASL provide support for high school librarians in Cleveland

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) are providing support to local efforts to avert cuts to high school librarians in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD).

The proposed cuts directly follow district reform efforts that led to massive restructuring and a transition to a per pupil budgeting system.

ALA applauds Lifeline program modernization to include broadband

The Federal Communications Commission voted today to update the Lifeline program to include broadband. Since 1985, the Lifeline program has provided a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings. The American Library Association has been a strong advocate for modernization of all Universal Service Fund programs to include affordable access to high-capacity broadband.

ALA President, ALSC President, and GLBTRT Chair Urge North Carolina Governor to Repeal HB2

CHICAGO -  Today American Library Association (ALA) President Sari Feldman, Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) President Andrew Medlar and ALA Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) Chair Peter Coyl released a joint letter to North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory recommending that he urge repeal of the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act (House Bill 2).

ALA, AASL support school librarians in Houston Independent School District

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) are assisting local efforts in Houston to maintain and expand school librarian positions, as a current proposal mandating a certified school librarian in every school in the Houston Independent School District is currently under scrutiny. ALA and AASL came out in support of this proposal in an op-ed published in the Houston Chronicle on March 4.

Demand for Apple encryption tool threatens library users’ privacy

CHICAGO – Libraries have a direct and immediate stake in the outcome of the Apple case, as patrons have 24/7 access to library materials and resources via their smart phones, tablets and mobile devices. Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Association (ALA) released the following statement in response to a federal court order that requires Apple to develop a new tool to eliminate specific security protections the company built into its phone software, in order to assist the Federal Bureau of Investigation in unlocking encrypted messages.

“The President could not have made a better choice": ALA comments on the pending nomination of Dr. Carla Hayden for Librarian of Congress
