New resolution addresses accurate information and media manipulation

CHICAGO — The need for accurate information is not new, but the divisive methods to undermine its credibility is. In response to the recent dialogue on fake news and news literacy, the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee (IFC) crafted “Resolution on Access to Accurate Information,” adopted by ALA Council on Jan. 24.

CHICAGO — The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) is unwavering in its long-standing commitment to promoting the free exchange of different viewpoints and ensuring privacy and confidentiality in academic libraries. American Library Association announces 2017 youth media award winners

ATLANTA - The American Library Association (ALA) today announced the top books, video and audio books for children and young adults – including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery and Printz awards – at its Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

2017 Schneider Family Book Awards recipients named

ATLANTA–The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Schneider Family Book Awards, which honor an author or illustrator for the artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences. The award was announced today during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits in Atlanta, Georgia, Jan. 20- 24.

ATLANTA — The thousands of librarians, library workers and supporters at the 2017 American Library Association Midwinter Meeting and Exhibits, held Jan. 20-24 in Atlanta, delved into the future of libraries, while also bringing a heightened sense of urgency to examining current needs and aspirations. In formal and informal settings, in engaged conversations and productive problem-solving sessions, and in the exhibit hall, they shared the latest library-related trends, updates, innovations, products, titles and services.

'March: Book Three' wins 2017 Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award

ATLANTA– “March: Book Three” created by John Lewis Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell, published by Top Shelf Productions, an imprint of IDW Publishing, has been named the 2017 winner of the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award, the first national award that honors the best nonfiction books for teens. The award was presented today by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits held Jan. 20 - 24, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Naomi Shihab Nye to deliver 2018 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture

ATLANTA – Writer and Poet Naomi Shihab Nye will deliver the 2018 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture. The announcement was made today by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits held Jan. 20– 24, in Atlanta, Georgia.

“A wise and lyrical observer, Naomi Shihab Nye consistently draws on her heritage and writing to attest to our shared humanity,” stated 2018 Arbuthnot Committee Chair Elizabeth Ramsey Bird.

ATLANTA– “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor” by Rick Riordan, published by Disney Hyperion, an imprint of Disney Book Group and “If I Was Your Girl” by Meredith Russo and published by Flatiron Books, are the 2017 recipients of the Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award, respectively.

Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Javaka Steptoe win 2017 Coretta Scott King Book Awards

ATLANTA – Congressman John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, co-authors of “March: Book Three,” and Javaka Steptoe, illustrator of “Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat,” are the winners of the 2017 Coretta Scott King Book Awards honoring African-American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults. Nicola Yoon, author of “The Sun Is Also a Star,” is the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent winner.

Kelly Barnhill, Javaka Steptoe win Newbery, Caldecott Medals

ATLANTA - Kelly Barnhill, author of “The Girl Who Drank the Moon,” and Javaka Steptoe, illustrator of “Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat,” are the 2017 winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott Medals, the most prestigious awards in children’s literature.
