ALA to support multicultural literature for youth with enhanced 2019 Youth Media Awards

CHICAGO - Librarians and library staff work to transform lives by connecting youth with materials that celebrate diversity, abolish cultural invisibility, and foster understanding.  The American Library Association (ALA) and its professional affiliates will highlight the best of the best in multicultural literature for youth by adding additional announcements to its 2019 ALA Youth Media Awards.

2018 Listen List: Outstanding Audiobook Narration for Adult Listeners revealed

DENVER—The Listen List Council of the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) has announced the 2018 selections of the Listen List, selected for both avid listeners of audiobooks and those new to the pleasures of the fastest-growing format in publishing. This juried list of twelve newly-released titles features extraordinary narrators and listening experiences that merit special attention by a general adult audience and the librarians who advise them.

United for Libraries to host Institute for Friends, Foundations, and Trustees at Midwinter

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — A free “United for Libraries Institute: Friends, Foundations, and Trustees” will be held Friday, Feb. 9, 1-4 p.m., at the Colorado Convention Center 107/109/11 at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver.

Library Trustees, Friends groups, Foundations, and staff are invited to join a free afternoon of expert speakers and learning opportunities. Miguel Figueroa of ALA’s Center for the Future of Libraries will deliver the keynote on “Friends, Foundations, Trustees, and the Future of Libraries.”

Anthony Graves to keynote 2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration at Midwinter

CHICAGO - Author and activist Anthony Graves will deliver the keynote address at the 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observance and Sunrise Celebration during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting and Exhibits in Denver. The 2018 Celebration will be held from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Monday, February 12 in the Colorado Convention Center.

OIF to showcase new selection policy toolkit at Midwinter

The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) will showcase an expanded and updated toolkit at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver, CO, to ensure libraries have an essential policy to protect against censorship. Titled “Selection & Reconsideration Policy Toolkit for Public, School, & Academic Libraries,” this comprehensive resource is designed for libraries of all types and sizes and offers practical guidance and resources on responsibility for selection, selecting controversial materials and reconsideration requests.

Susan Wiggs among the authors at United for Libraries Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, at Midwinter

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Susan Wiggs, Silas House, Elisabeth Hyde, Ariel Lawhon, Molly Tanzer and Spencer Wise  will be among the featured authors at the United for Libraries Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12 at the 2018 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver.

A light offering of tea, finger sandwiches and a variety of sweet treats will be served. A book signing will follow. United for Libraries will recognize the winners of the 2017 National Friends of Libraries Week Awards during the program.

2018 Nonfiction Award finalists announced

CHICAGO — The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), selected five books as finalists for the 2018 Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award, which honors the best nonfiction books written for young adults between Nov. 1, 2016 and Oct. 31, 2017. YALSA will name the 2018 award winner at the Youth Media Awards on Feb.
