ALSC recipient of 2017 GLBTRT Award for Political Activism

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has been named the recipient of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) Award for Political Activism. The award will be presented on Monday, June 26, 2017 during the Stonewall Book Awards program at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

Open Book Library awarded 2017 GLBTRT Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence in Serving the GLBT Community

CHICAGO – The American Library Association’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) announced the Open Book Library (Bibliothèque à livres ouverts) at the Community Centre for Gay and Lesbians of Montreal as the second recipient of the Newlen-Symons Award for Excellence in Serving the GLBT Community.

The award was established to honor a library, librarian, library staff member, library board and/or library friends groups who serve the GLBT community. Nominees are judged based on innovation, impact, sustainability and advocacy.

GLBTRT, GODORT seek nominations for first-ever Larry Romans Mentorship Award

CHICAGO – The American Library Association (ALA) Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) and Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) is seeking nominations for the inaugural Larry Romans Mentorship Award.

Named for Larry Romans (1947-2016), Head of Government Information and Media Services at Vanderbilt University’s Library from 1983 to 2014, the award recognizes librarians who, through their sustained mentoring efforts, have made a difference in the library profession.

Given since 2016, the Newlen-Symons Award honors recent library initiatives that demonstrate excellence in library services to or for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community.

President's message to ALA members and Annual Conference attendees

CHICAGO -  Today American Library Association (ALA) President Sari Feldman released the following message regarding diversity, equity and inclusion activities taking place during the ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition, June 23 - 28, in Orlando, Florida.

In the wake of the devastating and horrible tragedy that happened this past weekend in Orlando. I have been moved by the outpouring of concern and support from our ALA members toward the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.
