American Library Association announces 2015 youth media award winners

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) today announced the top books, video and audio books for children and young adults – including the Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Newbery and Printz awards – at its Midwinter Meeting in Chicago.

A list of all the 2015 award winners follows:

John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature:

“The Crossover,” written by Kwame Alexander, is the 2015 Newbery Medal winner. The book is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Live Oak Media wins 2015 Odyssey Award for 'H.O.R.S.E. A Game of Basketball and Imagination'

CHICAGO – Live Oak Media, producer of the audiobook, “H.O.R.S.E. A Game of Basketball and Imagination” has won the 2015 Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production. The award announcement was made today during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting held Jan. 30 – Feb. 3 in Chicago.

'I’ll Give You the Sun' wins 2015 Printz Award

CHICAGO – “I’ll Give You the Sun,”written by Jandy Nelson published by Dial Books, an imprint of Penguin Group, (USA) LLC, a Penguin Random House Company, has won the 2015 Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) today announced the winner during the ALA Midwinter Meeting, held Jan. 30 – Feb. 3 in Chicago.

Louis Shores Award for excellence in book reviewing names Brad Hooper of Booklist as winner

CHICAGO — The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association, has selected Brad Hooper of Booklist as the recipient of the 2015 Louis Shores Award, which recognizes outstanding book and media reviewing for libraries.

The Louis Shores Award recognizes an individual reviewer, group, editor, review medium or organization for excellence in reviewing materials for libraries.

New calendar and committee for 2016 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction

CHICAGO -- A new committee is getting a head start on selecting the prestigious 2016 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, awards that reflect the expert judgment and insight of library professionals who work closely with adult readers. The new committee has been appointed earlier than in previous years to accommodate a calendar shift in the awards schedule.

Daniel Kraus named new Booklist Books for Youth Editor

CHICAGO -- Daniel Kraus has been named new Books for Youth Editor at Booklist Publications, following the resignation of current director Gillian Engberg. Kraus joined Booklist in 2008 after two years as an associate editor at American Libraries magazine, where he created over 100 popular “AL Focus” videos.

LAS VEGAS –The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, funded through a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. “The Goldfinch,” by Donna Tartt received the medal for fiction, and “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin received the medal for nonfiction.
