Applications now accepted for school library program award

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming.

To be considered, nominations must be received by the ALA Public Programs Office by April 18, an extension of a previous deadline. Applications and award guidelines are available at www.ala.org/jaffarianaward.

Sarah Ostman Appointed PPO Communications Manager

CHICAGO — Sarah Ostman joined the staff of the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office (PPO) as communications manager on Feb. 18. Among Ostman’s responsibilities are managing and editing the ProgrammingLibrarian.org website and newsletter, managing social media and handling media and communications needs for PPO grant projects, including the Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC) initiative.

Librarians invited to learn the cultural story of our ‘Marvel Moon’ in free webinar

CHICAGO — The ALA Public Programs Office (PPO) and the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) invite library professionals to attend a free online learning opportunity demonstrating hands-on activities to engage young audiences in space science.  Entitled “Marvel Moon,” the online session will acquaint library audiences with NASA's investigations into the ongoing saga that has shaped our Moon and will present the LPI’s Explore! learning module that makes these investigations fun and interactive for children and teens. 

Librarians as change agents: PLA conference sessions to teach public librarians to 'Turn Outward'

ALA receives IMLS grant to assess impact of library public programs

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office announced today that it received a National Leadership Grant of $99,996, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The funds will support a one-year project, entitled the National Impact of Library Public Programs Assessment (NILPPA), for the development of a comprehensive research agenda to document the characteristics, audiences, outcomes, and value of public programming in libraries at a national level.

ALA announces Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovator Cohort grant opportunity

CHICAGO — A growing and diverse array of nonpartisan, non-agenda-driven materials about important public issues are available from the National Issues Forum Institute and other sources. The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office and ProgrammingLibrarian.org are pleased to announce a free, one hour webinar at 3 p.m. Central time on Nov. 5 that will present books, videos and other guides available to help librarians bring their communities together to talk in productive, civil and interesting ways.

Meadowbrook School of Weston Library wins Sara Jaffarian Award

CHICAGO – The Meadowbrook School of Weston Library in Weston, Mass. is the recipient of the 2013 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming, the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office announced. The Meadowbrook School Library will receive a plaque recognizing the achievement, a cash award of $4,000 and promotion of the winning program as a model for other school libraries through ProgrammingLibrarian.org.

Up to 50 libraries to participate in year-long public innovation training

CHICAGO - Continuing the collaboration between The Harwood Institute and the American Library Association on The Promise of Libraries Transforming Communities Initiative, a three-day Harwood Institute Public Innovators Lab designed especially for libraries kicks off a year of coaching and webinar support. The three-day immersion in the Harwood practice, Oct. 28-30, 2013, at the District of Columbia Public Library Martin Luther King Jr.
