School librarians invited to apply for $5,000 humanities programming prize

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is now accepting nominations for the 2015 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming.

School libraries, public or private, that served children in grades K-8 and conducted humanities programs during the 2013-14 school year are eligible. The winning library will receive $5,000.

ALA, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History announce ‘Exploring Human Origins’ traveling exhibition opportunity

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Human Origins Program, is accepting applications for the traveling exhibition Exploring Human Origins.   

The exhibition seeks to create an opportunity for a wide spectrum of audiences to engage the complex field of human evolution research in ways that are understandable, fulfilling, captivating and relevant.

Deadline extended for ‘Shakespeare and His First Folio’ traveling exhibition opportunity

CHICAGO — The application deadline for Shakespeare and His First Folio, a traveling exhibition offered by the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Folger Shakespeare Library and Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC), has been extended to Oct. 24.

Indianapolis middle school wins 2014 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award

CHICAGO — An Indiana middle school library has been recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) for its work in creating an innovative genealogy program for eighth-graders.

Perry Meridian Middle School in Indianapolis won the 2014 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Programming for its “R.O.A.D. (Research, Observe, Analyze, Discover) I Travel” unit, created in 2013 in partnership with the Indiana State Library and Indiana Historical Society.

The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to offer a series of sessions at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference that will help librarians leverage their trusted position in the community to engage people on issues that matter.

The 2014 ALA Annual Conference will take place June 26 to July 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas.

ALA announces 10 public libraries selected for Libraries Transforming Communities Public Innovators Cohort

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) today announced the 10 public libraries chosen to undergo an intensive 18-month, team-based community engagement training program as part of the Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC) Public Innovators Cohort.

The cohort, selected through a highly competitive peer-reviewed application process, is part of ALA’s LTC initiative, a national plan to help librarians strengthen their role as core community leaders and change-agents.
