PR Forum 2012: Implementing new technologies @ your library

CHICAGO –  Tom Peters, assistant dean for strategic initiatives at Illinois State University, will speak at the 2012 PR Forum from 8-10 a.m., June 24, at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Peters will discuss how to implement emerging technologies, including mobile technology, in your library through collaboration. The program will also address how technologies can be implemented successfully with attention to time and budget management.

New survey confirms librarians’ commitment to protecting privacy rights

CHICAGO - In conjunction with Choose Privacy Week, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) released preliminary findings from a new survey measuring librarians' views on privacy rights and protecting library users' privacy.

Librarians promote reading by participating in World Book Night

CHICAGO — Librarians are helping to spread the joy and love of reading by taking part in World Book Night on April 23.

Held in the United States, as well as the U.K. and Ireland, the initiative aims at promoting the value of reading,  printed books, bookstores and libraries to everyone year round.

World Book Night seeks out reluctant adult readers wherever they are, in towns and cities and in such public settings as nursing homes, food pantries, low income schools and mass transit centers, according to organizers.

ALA President Molly Raphael speaks up for Dallas libraries

DALLAS - America’s libraries are stretching their resources to their limit in the face of extraordinary budgetary challenges. This is especially true of the Dallas public library system, which has made the most of its dwindling funds. In this opinion piece, ALA President Molly Raphael urges Dallas officials to support their public library system. ALA to unveil the best of the best in children’s and young adult literature and media

CHICAGO — Children’s and young adult authors, illustrators and publishing groups will wait in anticipation as the American Library Association (ALA) announces the top awards in children’s and young adult literature and media.  The ALA Youth Media Awards, 7:45 a.m. CT, Jan. 23, Dallas Convention Center Theatre, are part of the ALA Midwinter Meeting which brings together nearly 10,000 library workers, authors and publishers.

Celebrate autumn @ your library

CHICAGO — Between fall breaks, Halloween and Thanksgiving, fall is a busy time of year for everyone @ your library.

Here are just a few examples of how libraries are celebrating autumn.

The Burbank (Calf.) Public Library will host Fall Cool Crafts @ your library. Children in grades 1-8 are invited to visit the library and begin preparing their Halloween costumes by making masks.
