CHICAGO Thirty-six mid-career librarians have been selected from a highly competitive pool to participate in Leading to the Future, ALA’s second four-day immersive leadership development program for future library leaders.

ALA announces winner of the first-ever Lemony Snicket Prize for Noble Librarians Faced With Adversity

 
CHICAGO – Laurence Copel, youth outreach librarian and founder of the Lower Ninth Ward Street Library, New Orleans, is the first recipient of the Lemony Snicket Prize for Noble Librarians Faced With Adversity. Daniel Handler, also known as Lemony Snicket, will present Copel with the prize on June 29 during the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas.

Feldman wins 2015–2016 ALA Presidency

CHICAGO Sari Feldman, executive director of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, Ohio, has been elected president of the American Library Association for the 2015-16 term.

Feldman received 5,184 votes, while her opponent, Maggie Farrell, dean of libraries at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, received 4,185 votes.

ALA councilors elected

CHICAGO 33 members have been elected as Councilors-at-Large on the Council of the American Library Association (ALA) for three-year terms. The terms begin at the conclusion of the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas and extend through the end of the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

Application deadline for 2014 ALA Leadership Institute is April 25

CHICAGO — If you haven’t submitted your application for the 2014 “Leading to the Future” ALA Leadership Institute (Aug. 10-14, Eaglewood Resort, Ill.), you have until Friday, April 25 to do so. Building on the success of the 2013 inaugural ALA Leadership Institute, and with support from Innovative Interfaces, the four-day immersive leadership development program for 40 mid-career librarians will be led again by ALA Past-President Maureen Sullivan and ACRL Content Strategist Kathryn Deiss.

American Library Association to host invitational summit

CHICAGO — The American Library Association is hosting an invitational Summit, Libraries From Now On:  Imagining the Future, May 2 and 3 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

The Summit will bring together thought leaders from the library community, from a broad spectrum of educational organizations, federal agencies and foundations that work with libraries to begin a national conversation about the future and libraries.

Luis Herrera, director San Francisco Public Library, receives 2014 Sullivan Award

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to announce the 2014 Peggy Sullivan Award for Public Library Administrators Supporting Services to Children has been awarded to Luis Herrera, San Francisco Public Library’s city librarian.  The Sullivan Award is presented annually to an individual in a library administrator role who has shown exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children.

American Library Association gears up for 2014 ALA election

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) is gearing up for its upcoming election.

Polls will open at 9 a.m. Central time on March 19, 2014 for the American Library Association’s annual election.

For the sixth year in a row, the American Library Association is holding its election exclusively online.  Last week, members received notification by email confirming their eligibility to vote.  To be eligible to vote, individuals must be members in good standing as of Jan. 31, 2014.

Robert Wolven receives the Melvil Dewey Medal

CHICAGO — Robert Wolven, associate university librarian for bibliographic services and collection development at Columbia University Libraries, has been awarded the 2014 Melvil Dewey Medal. This annual award is sponsored by OCLC in recognition of achievement for “creative leadership of high order, particularly in those fields in which Melvil Dewey was actively interested: library management, library training, cataloging and classification, and the tools and techniques of librarianship.”
