Public library staff invited to participate in summer reading survey from PLA

CHICAGO — Library staff members involved in summer reading are invited to participate in a survey released by the Public Library Association (PLA). The survey should take contributors 15-20 minutes and is designed to inform PLA’s efforts to develop a plan for a National Digital Summer Reading (NDSR) program website application. The survey closes on November 16.

PLA hosts webinar with Britton, developer of first makerspace in a public library

CHICAGO — At 1 p.m. CDT on Oct. 17, the Public Library Association (PLA) will host a live, hour-long webinar, “ Make Way for Makerspaces at the Library ” with Lauren Britton, transliteracy development director at the Fayetteville (N.Y.) Free Library, and creator of the first public library makerspace, the Fayetteville Fab Lab.

PLA receives IMLS grant to develop online digital literacy resource

CHICAGO—The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has been awarded a $291,178 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. PLA will partner with the ALA’s Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) to develop an online collection of digital literacy resources that will be accessible to libraries, patrons and other community-based organizations.

PLA offering its last free Turning the Page 2.0 advocacy course

CHICAGO — Librarians and library supporters have one more opportunity to participate in the Public Library Association (PLA)-sponsored online public library advocacy course, Turning the Page 2.0. The final free session from PLA begins the week of Sept. 24 and runs through the week of Oct. 29.

Yolanda Cuesta to lead PLA management course on serving diverse populations

CHICAGO — On Oct. 11 and 12 the Public Library Association (PLA) and its co-sponsor, the Kent District Library (KDL) in Grand Rapids, Mich., will present a two-day, in-person management course, “Serving Diverse Populations” at the KDL Cascade Township Branch.
