Colorado Association of Libraries wins ALA President’s Award for Advocacy, sponsored by United for Libraries

PHILADELPHIA — The Colorado Association of Libraries is the recipient of the 2013 ALA President’s Award for Advocacy, sponsored by United for Libraries.

The Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL) won for its 2012 campaign “Literacy Through Libraries: A Dollar Does It.” The campaign was to restore state funding for libraries; although a funding mechanism in the state budget had existed since 2001, the line item had gone unfunded for years due to budget constraints. This left Colorado as one of only a few states with no direct support of libraries.

Advocate for libraries on a national level by participating in Virtual Library Legislative Day on May 8

PHILADELPHIA – Virtual Library Legislative Day is part of the American Library Association’s (ALA) National Library Legislative Day on May 8, when hundreds of library advocates will descend on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and their staffs. Library advocates who cannot make it to Capitol Hill for the event can still be a part of the effort by calling and/or emailing their elected officials on May 8, or anytime the week of May 6-10.

Christine Hage elected 2013-2014 United for Libraries vice president/president-elect

PHILADELPHIA — Christine Lind Hage, director of the Rochester Hills (Mich.) Public Library, has been elected 2013-2014 United for Libraries vice president/president elect.

PHILADELPHIA – United for Libraries will present its Gala Author Tea, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 1 during the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago.

United for Libraries to present 2013 Public Service Award to Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.)

PHILADELPHIA —  Rod Wagner, director of the Nebraska Library Commission, will present United for Libraries’ 2013 Public Service Award to Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) during National Library Legislative Day activities in Washington, D.C., on May 7.

Rep. Fortenberry was the first Congressman willing to speak up about the importance of the issue of compelling libraries to test for lead in all children’s books. He recognized that a legislative fix that reasonably dealt with the issue was needed.

United for Libraries names Johnson and Mull ALA Trustee Citation recipients

PHILADELPHIA —  United for Libraries has named G. Victor Johnson and Beverly Mull as recipients of the ALA Trustee Citation.

The ALA Trustee Citation, established in 1941 to recognize public library trustees for distinguished service to library development, honors the best contributions and efforts of the estimated 60,000 American citizens who serve on library boards.
