Susan Orlean among the authors at United for Libraries Gala Author Toast, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, at Annual

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Susan Orlean, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Lou Berney, Lisa Unger, Leif Enger, and Delia Owens will be the featured authors at the United for Libraries Gala Author Toast, sponsored by ReferenceUSA, from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, June 25 at the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Festive beverages and light snacks will be served. United for Libraries will recognize the winners of the 2018 Baker & Taylor Awards during this event.

United for Libraries conducting survey on ‘Identifying Barriers to Library Board Service’

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania -- United for Libraries is working with the ALA Emerging Leaders program to identify possible barriers to service on library boards.

Feedback from current and past library trustees, friends, foundation staff/board, and others will be extremely helpful in recognizing common issues that current and past board members encounter, and in the brainstorming on how to alleviate any issues.

To fill out the survey, please visit www.ala.org/united/boardsurvey. The survey will be open through Saturday, May 19.

United for Libraries to designate Lawrence Library a Literary Landmark in honor of Barbara Cooney

PEPPERELL, Mass. – United for Libraries, in partnership with the Lawrence Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of Lawrence Library, will designate the library a Literary Landmark in honor of Barbara Cooney on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m.

The Lawrence Library is featured in the pages of Cooney’s picture book “Miss Rumphius,” which won the National Book Award in 1983.

Kaminski wins United for Libraries/ThriftBooks Friend Conference Grant

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania -- United for Libraries has awarded the 2018 United for Libraries/ThriftBooks Friend Conference Grant to Jennifer Kaminski, secretary of the Friends of the Daviess County Public Library in Owensboro, Ky.

Kaminski will receive $850 plus full conference registration to attend the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. A formal presentation to the grant winner will be made at the conference.

Pearson elected 2019-2020 United for Libraries president

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania — Peter Pearson, lead consultant and co-founder of Library Strategies Consulting Group, has been elected 2019-2020 United for Libraries president. Pearson will serve as president-elect during 2018-2019 under United for Libraries President Skip Dye.

Sally Gardner Reed Receives the 2018 Joseph W. Lippincott Award

CHICAGO – Sally Gardner Reed is the winner of the 2018 Joseph W. Lippincott Award.  This award is sponsored by Joseph W. Lippincott III and presented by the American Library Association for distinguished service to the profession of librarianship.

Black wins United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania -- United for Libraries has awarded the 2018 United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant to Dyanna Black of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Friends of the Library.

Black will receive $850 plus full conference registration to attend the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. A formal presentation to the grant winner will be made at the conference.

Black is vice president of the UMKC Friends board, as well as chair of its fundraising committee.

Applications for United for Libraries’ Baker & Taylor Awards due May 1

BRYN MAWR, Pennsylvania - United for Libraries is accepting applications for the Baker & Taylor Awards, given to friends of the library groups and library foundations. Applications are due May 1, 2018.

Given annually since 2000, the Baker & Taylor Awards have recognized more than 47 groups for outstanding efforts to support their library. Two winning groups will each receive $1,000.
