ALSC offers student session on mentoring Aug. 14

CHICAGO — On Tuesday, at 5 p.m. CDT on Aug. 14, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) will offer a free online workshop for all students and early career professionals interested in children’s services. Emerging as a Leader: How ALSC Helped Us Become the Future is presented by three members of ALSC’s 2012 Emerging Leader project team.

ALSC National Institute scholarship awarded to Peterson and Struckmeyer

The Friends of ALSC have awarded scholarships to the ALSC National Institute to Joella Peterson and Amanda Struckmeyer in efforts to support ALSC’s goal of continuing education for children’s librarians. The scholarships include Institute registration; transportation to and from the Institute; and two nights at the Sheridan Indianapolis City Centre where the Institute is being held. The ALSC Institute is taking place Sept. 20 – 22, 2012 in Indianapolis.

Nazareth College and the Youth Services Section of the New York Library Association chosen as site for 2013 Arbuthnot Lecture

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced that the 2013 May Hill Arbuthnot Committee has chosen Nazareth College and the Youth Services Section of the New York Library Association in Rochester, N.Y. as the site of the 2013 May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture featuring Michael Morpurgo.

Latino children’s authors and illustrators to receive prestigious 2012 Pura Belpré Award at ALA Annual Celebración

Pasadena, Calif. — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association and REFORMA (the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA affiliate), will host the annual Celebración! to honor the 2012 medal and honor winners of the Pura Belpré Award during the annual conference of the American Library Association. The event will take place from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2012 in the Grand Ballroom Center in the Disneyland Hotel.

ALSC announces Bound to Stay Bound Books, Melcher Scholarship winners

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced six scholarship winners for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Four winners were awarded the Bound to Stay Bound Books Scholarship, which is made possible by Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. All four recipients will receive $7,000 in scholarship aid for the 2012-13 academic year. The four recipients are: Michelle Ahern, Bethpage, N.Y., Rebecca Baker, Frankfort, Ky., Micaela Sanchez, Greeley, Colo., and Lisa Jordan, Longmont, Colo.

Job advice workshop offered by ALSC on June 13

CHICAGO— On Wednesday, June 13 at 6 p.m. Central, ALSC will offer a free online workshop for all students interested in children’s services. Getting Your First Library Job: Showcasing Skills and Packaging Passion features advice from Thom Barthelmess, curator, Butler Children’s Literature Center, Dominican University and Alison O’Reilly, director, Cutchogue (N.Y.) New Suffolk Free Library.

Starr LaTronica elected ALSC 2013-2014 president

CHICAGO — Starr LaTronica, youth services/outreach manager, Four County Library System, Vestal, N.Y., has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). 

ALSC summer online courses start July 9

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announces the release of the schedule for summer 2012 online courses. Registration is open for all courses. Classes begin Monday, July 9, 2012.
