Amina Luqman-Dawson, Frank Morrison win 2023 Coretta Scott King Book Awards

NEW ORLEANS — Amina Luqman-Dawson, author of “Freewater” and Frank Morrison, illustrator of “Standing in the Need of Prayer: A Modern Retelling of the Classic Spiritual” are the winners of the 2023 Coretta Scott King Book Awards honoring African American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults. Jas Hammonds, author of “We Deserve Monuments” and Janelle Washington, illustrator of “Choosing Brave: How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked The Civil Rights Movement” are the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent winners.

Dr. Claudette McLinn is the 2023 Recipient of the Coretta Scott King -Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement

NEW ORLEANS – Dr. Claudette McLinn is the recipient of the 2023 Coretta Scott King -Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award was announced today during the ALA’s LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience held Jan. 27-30, in New Orleans. 

“Dr. McLinn, a distinguished practitioner whose substantial contributions and active engagement as an advocate and champion of African American children’s literature are evident in the extraordinary impact of her work,” said Awards Committee Chair Carolyn L. Garnes.
